Wax Melts 101: How to Use Them, How Long They Last & Why Soy Wax Wins
If you've just discovered wax melts — or you're staring at your first snap bar wondering what to do with it — this guide is for you. Wax melts are one of the easiest, safest and most affordable ways to fill your home with fragrance, and once you know a few simple tricks you'll get far more out of every bar. Here's everything you need to know, from how to use them to how long they last and why we pour ours from soy and coconut wax.
What exactly is a wax melt?
A wax melt is a small, scented piece of wax that you gently warm to release its fragrance — it has no wick of its own. Instead of burning like a candle, the wax is warmed in a wax burner — either by a small tea light tucked safely inside, or by electric heat — until it turns to liquid and fills the room with scent. When it cools it sets again, ready for next time. Because any flame stays shielded inside the burner (and electric burners use none at all), wax melts are a wonderfully safe way to scent your home.
What is a snap bar?
A snap bar is simply a wax melt made in a segmented bar — a bit like a bar of chocolate. You snap off one or two cubes at a time, so a single bar gives you many separate uses. Our snap bars are hand-poured in 50g bars, each one packed with a generous fragrance load so even one cube goes a long way. Browse the full range in All Wax Melts.
Why we pour soy and coconut wax (not paraffin)
Not all wax is equal. A lot of cheap melts are made from paraffin, a petroleum by-product. We choose a natural soy and coconut wax blend instead, and here's why it matters:
- A cleaner melt — natural wax melts more evenly and doesn't leave the sooty residue paraffin can.
- It lasts longer — soy and coconut wax have a lower melt point, so your fragrance is released slowly rather than flashing off all at once.
- Better scent throw — that lower melt point carries fragrance beautifully through a room.
- Vegan & cruelty-free — plant-based wax, never tested on animals.
How to use a wax melt (step by step)
Using a wax melt takes seconds. You'll need a wax burner — either a tea-light burner or an electric wax melt burner.
- Snap one or two cubes from your bar (or drop in a single melt) into the dish at the top of your burner.
- If you're using a tea-light burner, light a tea light and pop it in the space below the dish. For an electric burner, simply switch it on.
- Within a few minutes the wax will melt and your fragrance will begin to fill the room.
- Enjoy! When you're finished, blow out the tea light or switch off the burner and let the wax set again.
New to burners? Our post on choosing a wax melt burner walks you through the options — but in short, an electric burner is the easiest and safest, with no flame at all: just plug in and go.
How much wax should you use — and how long does it last?
Start with one cube. Our fragrances are strong, so a single cube is usually plenty for an average room — add a second only if you want a bolder scent or you're filling a larger space.
As a rough guide, one cube gives around 8 to 12 hours of fragrance across several uses before it needs replacing. A whole 50g snap bar (six cubes) can therefore last many weeks. You'll know it's time to change the wax when the scent fades even though the wax is fully melted — that means the fragrance oil has been used up, even though the wax itself remains. Wax melts vs candles: which is better?
Both have their place, but wax melts have some real advantages:
| Wax melts | Candles | |
| Flame | Shielded flame — kept inside the burner (or none, with electric) | Open flame |
| Change scent | Any time — just swap the cube | Stuck with one scent |
| Cost per use | Lower — one bar, many melts | Higher |
| Scent strength | Strong, adjustable | Fixed |

How to change and clean your wax melts
When the fragrance has faded, changing the wax is easy — and no scraping required:
- The heat and pop method: let the wax harden fully, then pop a lit tea light under the burner for less than 60 seconds. This just softens the base of the wax, so you can scoop it out in one piece with a paper towel.
- The cotton-wool method: while the wax is still liquid, switch off the burner, let it cool slightly, then soak it up with a ball of cotton wool and pop it in the bin.
Give the dish a quick wipe and it's ready for your next scent.
Are wax melts safe?
Wax melts are one of the safest ways to fragrance a home because any flame stays shielded inside the burner rather than burning out in the open. A few sensible tips: never add water to the wax, keep burners out of reach of children and pets, place your burner on a heat-resistant surface, and never leave a lit tea light unattended. With an electric burner you don't even have a flame to think about. For more detail, read our full guide on whether wax melts are safe.

Frequently asked questions
How many times can you use a wax melt?
A single cube can be melted and re-set several times over — typically until you've had around 8 to 12 hours of fragrance from it. Once the scent fades, swap in a fresh cube.
Can you mix wax melt scents?
Absolutely — half a cube of two different fragrances in the same burner is a lovely way to create your own signature blend. Start with scents from the same family if you're unsure.
Do wax melts expire?
They don't spoil, but fragrance is strongest when fresh. For the best scent throw, use your melts within about 12 months and store them somewhere cool and out of direct sunlight.
Are your wax melts vegan?
Yes — every bar is poured from a plant-based soy and coconut wax blend and is vegan and cruelty-free.
