Wax Melts vs Candles: Which Is Right for You?

If you love filling your home with fragrance, you've probably stood in front of our shop wondering: wax melts or candles? The honest answer is that both are brilliant - they just suit different moods, rooms and routines. Here's how to decide which is right for you.

The Main Difference

A candle burns its own wick and wax together, releasing fragrance as it melts and giving you a flickering flame at the same time. A wax melt works differently - you place a small piece (like our 50g Snap Bars) into the dish of a wax burner, which uses either a tealight or an electric heating element underneath to gently warm the wax and release the scent, with no wick and no open flame from the wax itself.

Wax Melts: The Advantages

  • No naked flame from the wax - if you're using an electric burner, there's no open flame at all, which many people find gives extra peace of mind around children and pets.
  • Stronger scent throw - because the wax is heated rather than burned, wax melts often fill a room with fragrance faster and more intensely than a candle.
  • Snap and swap - our Snap Bars are designed to break into individual cubes, so you can use just one segment, save the rest, or mix two scents together in the same burner for a custom blend.
  • Great value - a single 50g Snap Bar typically gives around 40 hours of fragrance, and you're only paying for scent, not a wick or vessel.

Candles: The Advantages

  • Ambience - nothing quite replaces the warm, flickering glow of a real flame, especially for cosy nights in or special occasions.
  • No extra equipment needed - just light the wick. There's no burner to buy or clean.
  • Beautiful as décor - a candle sitting on a shelf or table adds to a room's look even when it's not lit.

So, Which Should You Choose?

If you want the strongest, most consistent fragrance throughout the day - especially in a hallway, bathroom, or anywhere you want scent without a flame burning for hours - wax melts are usually the better choice. If you're after atmosphere and a bit of romance for an evening in, a candle is hard to beat.

Many of our customers simply use both: wax melts for everyday fragrance, and candles for special evenings. All of our wax melts and candles are hand-poured in the UK using vegan-friendly, sustainably sourced soy wax, so whichever you choose, you're getting the same quality and care in every product.
